The developing tank is the main piece of film processing
equipment. Several types are available, but by far the most
common has a black plastic body and lid, with integral
pouring/light seal and a translucent set of film spirals inside.
The translucent spirals are for the light reversal stage when
processing transparancy film.
A `universal` tank will usually have settings for 120 - medium
format - and 35 mm. film. One pair of spirals will take two
normal lengths of 120 loaded end to end, or 1 220 film.
The full spiral is needed for a 36 exposure 35 mm. film - 5 feet
4 inches long - but two sets of spirals will fit in the tank when
set for 35 mm. The average tank requires 300 ml. of chemical for
a 35 mm. film and 500 - 600 ml. for 120/220 or 2X35mm 36 exp.
Tanks must be loaded in TOTAL darkness, but then all processing
can take place in normal lighting. Spirals usually load from the
outside in using an easy ratchet motion.
It is best to have a few practice runs first time with a length
of old film as locating the film initially can be tricky,
especially with 120 film. Note that 120 film has a backing paper
which is discarded before loading.
Believe it or not, it has been known for novices to load the
backing paper and throw away the film !
